Top 10 SEO Newsletters That Will Make You a Better SEO

March 21, 2024

Jeremy Moser

If there were two things you’d find in abundance on the internet:

  1. Memes
  2. Newsletters

Yes, I know. There are hundreds of popular newsletters online, from Morning Brew to The Hustle. Plus, who wants another email hitting their already crowded inbox?

In other words, it’s difficult to decide which newsletters are actually worth subscribing to.

Well, if you’re in the SEO niche (or have an interest in SEO topics), I recommend these top SEO newsletters.

Even as a seasoned SEO professional with a thriving SEO agency, I still learn a thing or two every time these newsletters end up in my inbox. But before we dig in, let’s answer the question: are newsletters really still worth the time and effort to create?

Are newsletters still worth it?

Newsletters (and other email marketing tactics) are definitely still worth pursuing — especially in B2B industries and niches. In fact, 44% of B2B marketers point to email marketing as their most productive channel, outperforming social media and content marketing.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Long story short, newsletters are worth creating, and the good ones are worth subscribing to. Now, let’s look at a list of my favorites.

1. SEO Power Plays by Jeremy Moser

SEO Power Plays, built using Beehiiv, is a newsletter that’s personally very close to my heart, and that’s only partly because I (aka Jeremy Moser) author it 😉.

Jokes aside, here’s everything that makes this newsletter special.

  • I won’t just tell you the facts as is. I try to provide my own insights about SEO and content marketing topics (this is mainly because I pull from my experience of having helped out brands like ActiveCampaign, Freshworks, Binance, etc., with their SEO strategy and building my own SEO/link-building firm, uSERP).
  • The newsletter is freely available for everyone, and it’s delivered bi-weekly to your inbox (we’re also nearing the 10k subscriber count!)
  • I also share SEO resources that I personally use to rank (there’s no gatekeeping!).

2. Search News You Can Use by Marie Haynes

Marie Haynes is an SEO expert everyone knows and loves, and I wouldn’t be understating it if I said her newsletter is a cult favorite. On that note, you can sign up for Search News You Can Use via her LinkedIn profile, which has over 10,000 followers.

This newsletter covers Google news, SEO trends, and search engine optimization strategies in an actionable way that helps the reader increase their SERP rankings. If you sign up, you’ll receive this free newsletter through weekly emails.

Marie also has another additional newsletter, Marie’s Thoughts, which is a paid subscription‌ — ‌in this newsletter, she shares her personal experience and thoughts about AI and SEO.

On that note, if you’re interested in uncovering more insights with her, you can also consider checking out Marie’s podcast.

3. The SEOFOMO Newsletter by Aleyda Solis

With a steady list of 30k+ subscribers, the SEOFOMO Newsletter delivers exactly what the name says ‌ — i.e., if you don’t sign up for this weekly newsletter for SEO news, you’re about to get major FOMO.

Aleyda Solis hosts the newsletter . She’s a professional SEO consultant who stands out as one of the more popular personalities in our industry. She’s also had features in the Huffington Post, Forbes, and the Google Partners Podcast.

As for the newsletter, here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Early announcements of industry news and SEO trends
  • Names of industry experts to follow
  • Free guides, tools, and resources
  • Access to SEO job listings

4. SEO For Lunch by Nick LeRoy

Nick LeRoy, a freelance SEO consultant specializing in technical SEO and SEO strategy, hosted SEO for Lunch. He also has another newsletter, The SEO Freelancer, which focuses more on helping aspiring SEO freelancers.

While the latter (The SEO Freelancer) deals with the nitty-gritty bits of operating your business, the former (SEO for Lunch) places special emphasis on covering algorithm updates and must-read news about search and SEO.

Nick also has a really actionable writing style, wherein he informs the reader about SEO/search news and shows you how to leverage this news to improve your SERP rankings

5. SEO Notebook by Steve Toth (not the politician)

SEO Notebook by Steve Toth (Home Page)

Just like most others on this list, the SEO Notebook is also a weekly newsletter. Steve Toth authors this one‌ — ‌ he’s an SEO consultant who’s founded SEO-focused brands like SEO That Ranks, SEO IRL, and GScore (he also used to lead SEO strategy at Freshbooks).

In this newsletter, Steve shares SEO tips and tricks to improve your search experience, help you rank faster, and deliver better ROI. For example, in the past few months, he’s shared insights on leveraging AI for SEO growth.

For each tip, Steve dives in with both feet, providing the reader with all the resources, screenshots, and evidence they’d need to apply these tips in real life (even still, the information is digestible and easy-to-read and doesn’t contain any fluff or long rants).

6. The Backlinko Newsletter by Brian Dean

Backlinko is a newsletter with one of the largest subscriber lists I’ve seen (to be exact, it has over 173k subscribers).

Here, you can count on Brian Dean, the founder of Backlinko and Exploding Topics (both SEO-focused companies), to share tips, tricks, strategies, resources, and content exclusive to this subscriber list.

For example, he routinely covers link-building strategies and SEO tactics any business can copy. Since Brian chooses to go in-depth with every topic, you also learn the context and application of every tip he shares.

Word to the wise: If you hear any advice/insights from the “SEO Genius,” you listen

7. Semrush Newsroom by the Semrush team

My favorite SEO tool, Semrush, hosts the Semrush Newsroom newsletter, and it covers insights that can help small and medium businesses optimize their search rankings and marketing campaigns’ effectiveness. (You heard that right, this newsletter also covers content marketing topics.)

They provide readers with tons of resources, expert insights, in-depth analysis and guides, algorithm updates, industry trends, and so much more!

However, one thing that makes this newsletter stand out is that it provides real-world examples to show how the tips/tricks applied to real-life brands, how they improved their SEO strategy, and what desired actions they achieved.

8. WTF is SEO? by Jessie Willms and Shelby Blackley

WTF is SEO? is a newsletter that focuses on uncovering both common and advanced SEO topics (think about stuff like “How to do keyword research,” “What is thin content,” and “Top industry trends to look out for in 2024”).

Even as an SEO professional myself, this newsletter helps me understand how to explain core topics like these in a simpler way.

For instance, I do tons of SEO consulting and have an SEO firm. So, I have to educate my writers, clients, and partners about why I’m doing certain things and why we should continue doing them to improve search results.

I also sometimes share resources with my internal team on how to do certain things (e.g., keyword research).

All credit goes to Jessie Willms (SEO Editor for The Guardian) and Shelby Blackley (SEO Manager at The Athletic) for curating this newsletter.

9. Ahrefs Digest by Si Quan Ong

Hosted by Si Quan (Senior content marketer at Ahrefs), the Ahrefs’ Digest is a weekly newsletter that boasts a steady list of more than 284k subscribers ‌ — ‌ and this impressive list is only possible because of the impressive insights Si Quan shares.

For reference, here’s what this newsletter has to offer:

  • Non-spammy content that doesn’t end with a CTA to buy anything. Instead, it only provides the reader with actionable content.
  • The best bit of curated information (the newsletter covers industry news, SEO updates, tips/tricks, advice from experts, and occasionally, memes).
  • Easy-to-read language that explains the most boring SEO news in the most refreshing way possible.

You can honestly see the hours of research the Ahrefs team puts in behind every single edition of this newsletter.

10. Search Engine Journal Newsletter by the SEJ team

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the Search Engine Journal Newsletter. The SEJ team hosts this daily newsletter, and you can curate your newsletter feed based on what kind of information you’d like to see (e.g., SEO, PPC, Content, or Social).

The SEJ maintains one of the most reliable sources of information in the SEO industry and holds the same standards for its newsletter. That’s to say, you can expect to see information about algorithm updates, industry news, and SEO tactics, all written in a concise and actionable way.

They also often share resources you can access to improve your SEO knowledge (e.g., links to webinars, original articles, upcoming events, detailed tutorials, and more).

Don’t Sleep on SEO Newsletters

If I were starting my SEO career from scratch, these are the top 10 SEO newsletters I’d subscribe to in a heartbeat.

Chances are, you might be there too (i.e., just starting your SEO journey), and these newsletters will help you keep a pulse on all the need-to-know information about SEO and search.

So, to take things forward, here’s one SEO newsletter you can sign up for today: SEO Power Plays by Jeremy Moser (and this one’s a personal recommendation 😉)
