Google has begun its latest update, rolling out AI-organized search results, which Google says are “some of our most significant search updates yet.”
In a taste of what’s to come, Google chose recipes and meal-related searches for its first AI-organized search results subject.
Google implements AI-organized search results
Google introduced its AI-organized search results in the UK and the US on Thursday, October 3. The tech giant says its new search format will provide multiple personalized content results specifically for the searcher.
Google’s announcement states:
- “This week, we’re rolling out search results pages organized with AI in the U.S. — beginning with recipes and meal inspiration on mobile. You’ll now see a full-page experience with relevant results organized just for you. You can easily explore content and perspectives from across the web, including articles, videos, forums, and more — all in one place.”
The latest update continues the battle between Google and other tech firms to attract new users and keep existing ones by providing a complete content experience.
Google said:
- “You’ll now see a full-page experience, with relevant results organized just for you. You can easily explore content and perspectives from across the web, including articles, videos, forums, and more — all in one place.”
What it looks like:
Google addresses publishers’ concerns
Many independent site owners are worried Google has been favoring big brands and advertisers and is biased in how it presents information.
While Google denies this, publishers believe that placing AI Overviews above organic search results could further reduce their site’s click-through rates.
AI-organized results increasing traffic
Google said its testing shows AI-organized search results drive more traffic to supporting websites by making it easier for users to find what they’re looking for.
New data from BrightEdge backs up Google’s claim. It shows that AI Overview is now prioritizing niche-specific websites and reducing its priority to big brands that provide content on multiple topics.
Google test results show:
- “Searchers have found AI-organized search results pages more helpful. And with AI-organized search results pages, we’re bringing people more diverse content formats and sites, creating even more opportunities for content to be discovered.”
Google confirms new design is increasing traffic:
- “We’ve seen that this improved experience has driven an increase in traffic to supporting websites compared to the previous design, and people are finding it easier to visit sites that interest them.”
Google said the increase in traffic was also due to adding links within Overview, which means “people are finding it easier to visit sites that interest them.”
Looking forward
Since the launch of AI Overviews, Google has been tweaking and improving the tool, reducing the frequency with which AI Overviews results show and becoming more selective about where it sources its information. Some significant changes since AI Overview’s rocky launch, besides this latest update, are how it is now prioritizing smaller, independent topic-specific sites, Google organic search results and AI Overviews are overlapping more than before, an increased focus on e-commerce, and the announcement that Google will soon introduce ads within AI Overviews on mobile, just in time for the busiest shopping season of the year!
