Google recently updated its Google Notes documentation to remind users that Notes will end on July 31, 2024, and to download their Notes content before it’s too late.

Google announced its decision to end notes in April 2024; the recent document update confirms the feature’s testing has now finished.

Google Notes recap

Google introduced its Notes experiment in Search Labs on March 20, 2023, to allow users to add and view comments on search results.

Notes aimed to improve the quality and helpfulness of search results by allowing real people to add their opinions and share insights on content.

Google Search Central explanation of Notes

  • “Notes is an experiment in Search Labs where people can share helpful tips and unique insights.”

Users who opted to use Notes via Google’s Search Labs saw a Notes button on the Google app to add their comments on Discovery articles and search results.

What Note looks like:

Real people leaving helpful tips on a publisher’s content on Google Search now seems a world away, considering Google’s recent launch of AI Overviews, even with the recent improvements!

Notes documentation update

Google updated its Note documentation to remind users that Note will shut down permanently this July, and Google account holders should use Google Takeout to download their Note data.

The Google Takeout feature allows Google account holders to download data they store in their Google account, including Google Drive, Mail, Calendar, Photos, and Notes.

Users can then store their downloaded data on their computer or save it on a cloud storage service.

Check out the Google Account Help page to learn how to download your data from Note using Google Takeout.
