Revenue attribution counts closed clients who cited the report as their reason for booking a call, 2024 through 2026. It excludes influenced deals, referral traffic value, and ranking gains on userp.io. Results for a client campaign depend on the category, the story, and the distribution behind it.

Why digital PR, why now

116 SEO leaders picked their strongest tactic. Digital PR won by a distance.

Our 2027 State of Backlinks survey asked heads of SEO which link building tactic delivered their strongest results in the last 12 months, which one is most overused, and what is dying. The answers are the case for this service.

The tactics that are dying share one thing

They produce links nobody asked for on pages nobody reads. The respondents' reasoning was consistent: search models understand context and topical authority now, AI made templated outreach free and therefore worthless, and anything not truly earned is getting filtered out as noise.

Almost every “smartest link of the year” answer had the same shape: something worth citing (data, a study, a product, an expert), put in front of the right person at the right moment. That is what a digital PR agency is for.

Links are still critical. 96.5% of the panel see a moderate or high impact on rankings and 62.1% still call backlinks a top-3 ranking factor. What changed is the bar for what counts as a good one.

EarlyBird had just raised a $3.1M seed round and needed brand awareness and trust in the financial gifting space. Our digital PR work landed a detailed TechCrunch feature that drove referral traffic converting at 29.5%, then kept the momentum going with targeted press releases, niche editorial placements, and content built to outrank NerdWallet, Forbes, and The Motley Fool.

  • Featured in TechCrunch and other major finance and technology publications
  • 1,064 first-page keywords, outranking NerdWallet, The Balance, Forbes, Motley Fool, Fidelity, and Investopedia in year one
  • 800% increase in organic traffic; the crossover of PR and SEO working on the same pages

The lesson we carry into every campaign: the same story that gets a journalist's attention also earns the authority that ranks the commercial pages. Run them separately and you pay twice.

What a digital PR agency does

Digital PR services, defined by the work

A digital PR agency builds online visibility, brand authority, and high-quality SEO backlinks by earning media coverage in digital publications, blogs, and news sites. Here is what that covers at uSERP, and what each part is for.

Data-driven campaigns

Original research and industry reports

Surveys, proprietary data analysis, and trend studies that journalists want to reference and link to. The single most common source of “smartest link of the year” in our survey, and the core of our service.

Media pitching and outreach

Journalist and editor relationships

Personalized pitches to online journalists, editors, and bloggers with a newsworthy angle, a data point, or expert commentary. No mass-blast press releases, no source-platform spam.

Link building for SEO

Editorial links to commercial pages

High-authority, white-hat backlinks pointed at the product, comparison, and service pages that make money, plus guaranteed editorial placements in the mix so the campaign has a floor.

Reactive PR and newsjacking

Expert commentary on live stories

Monitoring the news in your category and inserting your spokespeople into active conversations with a fast, credible take. Unpaid placements that do not expire.

Thought leadership

Executives as industry authorities

Contributed articles, expert quotes, podcast and webinar placements that build the entity authority AI engines and Google both read.

Digital PR vs. traditional PR vs. link building

Three things people mean when they say PR. We sell the one in the middle, with the third built in.

Digital PR (uSERP)
Traditional PR and plain link building
Primary goal
Search visibility, referral traffic, AI citations, and long-term brand authority
Traditional PR: event-driven publicity and awareness. Link building: backlinks, full stop.
Mediums
News sites, industry publications, blogs, newsletters, social, and AI-driven search engines
Traditional PR: print, TV, radio. Link building: whichever site will place a link.
What you get
Coverage, mentions, and editorial links together, from one story
Traditional PR: a clipping. Link building: a link on its own, often on a page nobody reads.
Measurability
High: placements, referral traffic, rankings, AI citations, and pipeline where attribution allows
Traditional PR: hard to tie to web conversions. Link building: counts links, rarely outcomes.
How our digital PR service works

Research, report, distribution, reporting. One campaign, four parts.

Most digital PR agencies stop at the pitch. We put distribution behind every campaign: our LinkedIn network, our newsletter network, creators in your niche, journalist outreach, guaranteed links, and paid amplification when it makes sense.

01 · The research

A study your category has not seen

We find the question your buyers and the press actually want answered, then design the research to answer it: an expert survey when the audience is reachable, or an industry data report when it is not. Proprietary data, scraped public data, and trend analysis all count. You are never limited to survey responses.

What you receiveAngle brief, research design, fielding or data collection, expert interviews with recognized voices in your category (credibility now, promotion lift at launch), and a cleaned dataset with the headline findings.

Timeline

02 · The report

A designed, citable asset, not a PDF

The findings become a long-form report on your site with native charts, expert quotes, built-in citations, and custom design. Every chart gets a one-click PNG download and an auto-citation block so writers can lift it and credit you, and every chart is built to be quoted by an AI engine as well as a person.

What you receiveThe published report page written by a subject matter expert, press-ready chart downloads with citations, a summary deck, and a content promo calendar with 10 to 20 pre-written social posts.

03 · Distribution

The Six-Wing Distribution Engine

This is what separates our digital PR services from a media list and a press release. The report launches through our LinkedIn network and our newsletter distribution network, gets seeded to creators and influencers in your niche, goes to journalists with a personalized pitch, and is backed by guaranteed editorial links so the campaign has a floor. Paid media can be layered on top.

What you receiveA distribution plan with owners and dates, live placement record, and the minimum guaranteed links written into the scope.

04 · Reporting

Coverage, links, rankings, and AI citations in one view

A digital PR agency should be able to tell you what a placement did, not only that it happened. We report the whole chain: mentions and links (activity), referral traffic and audience relevance (evaluation), ranking movement and AI citations (discovery), and pipeline where attribution allows (outcome).

What you receiveWeekly delivery updates during the campaign, a launch report at day 30, and a 90-day impact report with rankings and observed AI citations.

You get a weekly update during the campaign and a monthly review afterward that decides what to amplify, what to reclaim, and where the next story is.

Should you hire a digital PR agency, or fix something else first?

Verify this before you buy digital PR from anyone

The decision is not simply whether to hire a digital PR agency. It is whether earned media would strengthen the pages your growth already depends on, and whether the proposal in front of you is real PR or a link building fee with a different name on the invoice.

What you seeVerify first, then what to do
!Authority or DR growth has plateaued despite regular content output.Check whether the constraint is content volume, link relevance, or a lack of earned mentions from legitimate publications. A quality gap and a quantity gap look identical on a dashboard. Diagnose which input is missing before adding a new line of spend.
!A digital PR proposal promises a specific number of media placements.Ask which placements are contractually guaranteed and which depend on editorial discretion. Coverage cannot be guaranteed by anyone honest. Editorial links can. A credible proposal separates the two and says what happens if the story does not land.
!You are buying digital PR partly to improve AI search visibility.Ask for the measurement method: prompt set, platforms, and dates. A mention is a changing discovery signal to monitor, not a guaranteed citation. Any agency claiming otherwise is selling the category, not the work.
!Your last campaign got coverage, but nothing moved on the site.Check where the links pointed. Coverage that links to the homepage or a blog post does little for the pages that sell. The next campaign should be planned with the target pages and internal links decided first.
!Your offer is still being validated, or there is no marketing function to act on coverage.Wait. Digital PR amplifies what is already working. A foundational link building program or a fractional SEO lead is the better first step, and we will say so on the call.

If one of these sounds familiar, bring it to the call. We will tell you whether a campaign, a retainer, or something else entirely is the right scope.

Digital PR questions

Before you scope a campaign

About digital PR agencies

What is a digital PR agency?
A digital PR agency builds online visibility, brand authority, and high-quality SEO backlinks by earning media coverage in digital publications, blogs, and news sites. The work combines newsworthy content (usually original research or expert commentary), journalist outreach, and link building so one story produces coverage, mentions, and editorial links together.
What does a digital PR agency do, and what services should I expect?
Media pitching and outreach, link building for SEO, data-driven campaigns and original research, reactive PR and newsjacking, thought leadership placement, and now generative engine optimization: getting your brand cited correctly on the sources AI platforms pull from. At uSERP, every campaign also includes the report design and a distribution plan, which most digital PR services leave to you.
What is the difference between digital PR and link building?
Link building is a tactic focused on acquiring backlinks. Digital PR is the broader practice of earning media coverage through a newsworthy story and journalist relationships; the coverage produces links, brand mentions, and audience reach together. Our survey found the two are converging: 53.4% of SEO leaders named digital PR their strongest link building tactic, and guest posting the most overused.
What is the difference between digital PR and traditional PR?
Traditional PR chases event-driven publicity in print, TV, and radio and is hard to tie to web conversions. Digital PR targets news sites, industry publications, blogs, newsletters, and AI-driven search engines, and is measured in referral traffic, rankings, AI citations, and pipeline. The primary goal is search visibility and long-term brand equity rather than a clipping.
How much does a digital PR agency cost?
Published retainers run from roughly $5,000 to $50,000+ per month for full-service programs, and a 2025 BuzzStream survey of about 70 agency leaders put the average cost per digital PR link near $600. uSERP prices digital PR per campaign, $15,000 to $100,000+ one-time depending on research scope, report design, distribution levers, and guaranteed link minimums, with retainers available for quarterly campaigns.
Can a digital PR agency guarantee media placements?
No. Coverage depends on newsworthiness and editorial discretion, and any agency promising guaranteed coverage is describing something other than earned media. What uSERP does guarantee, in writing, is a minimum number of editorial links from our link building team, so every campaign has a floor while the earned coverage compounds on top.
Is digital PR worth it for SEO?
Yes, when the links and mentions are relevant and point at pages that matter. A handful of relevant, high-authority placements outperforms a larger number of low-relevance mentions. Our own study earned 706 backlinks and 331 press mentions across three editions and directly won $1.15M in clients; EarlyBird went from zero to 70,000 monthly organic visits with digital PR feeding the authority.
How does digital PR affect AI search visibility (GEO and AEO)?
AI systems lean on independent third-party sources when constructing answers, so earned coverage is one of the few inputs a brand can influence. 81.9% of the SEO leaders we surveyed believe backlinks influence AI citations and 46.6% have seen it happen with evidence. We treat AI citations as a discovery signal to monitor across an agreed prompt set, not a guaranteed outcome.
How do I choose a digital PR agency?
Ask to see a campaign the agency ran for itself, with the numbers. Ask which placements are guaranteed and which are earned. Ask where the links will point and who decides. Ask what distribution sits behind the pitch beyond a media list. Ask how AI citations are measured. An agency that can answer all five in plain language, with evidence, is worth a call.
Which agency does both SEO and digital PR?
uSERP does. Digital PR campaigns are planned with your SEO lead against the commercial pages that need authority, delivered by a PR operations team, and backed by the same link building team that serves monday.com, Robinhood, CrowdStrike, and Freshworks. One roadmap, one report.

Working with uSERP

Is digital PR different from uSERP's link building service?
Yes. Link building is a monthly retainer that delivers a set number of editorial links to your target pages. Digital PR is a campaign: we create original research, publish it as a designed report on your site, distribute it through social, newsletter, creators, and journalists, and back it with guaranteed links. Many clients run both; the campaign creates the story, the retainer keeps the authority compounding.
Do we need our own data, or can you create the study?
Either. We can field an expert survey to your audience, analyze proprietary data from your product, or build an industry trend report from public and licensed sources. You are not limited to survey responses, which are the slowest part of most campaigns.
What distribution do you actually put behind a campaign?
Six wings: launch across our LinkedIn network of SEO and marketing leaders, a feature across our newsletter distribution network, creator and influencer seeding in your niche, direct journalist pitching in waves with the chart and stat each writer needs, guaranteed high-authority editorial links from our link building team, and paid media behind the top-performing posts.
How long does a digital PR campaign take?
Two to eight weeks to launch, depending on complexity. A proprietary data analysis can be researched, designed, and live in about two weeks. A full expert survey with interviews and a multi-chapter report takes closer to eight. Coverage and links keep landing after launch, and the day-90 report captures rankings and AI citations.
What do you report, and how?
Weekly delivery updates during the campaign, a day-30 launch report, and a day-90 impact report. Each separates activity (mentions, links), evaluation (referral traffic, audience relevance), discovery (rankings, AI citations across an agreed prompt set), and outcome (pipeline where attribution allows), so you can tell a placement count from a result.
Which industries do you work with?
SaaS, fintech, and enterprise technology most often, plus healthcare, ecommerce, professional services, and local businesses with valuable commercial searches. Richter Studios, a Chicago video production company, went from DR 32 to 55 in two months with the same approach.
Can digital PR run alongside our existing agency or in-house team?
Yes. The campaign is planned with whoever owns your SEO so the links point at the right pages. If you need someone to own the whole search program across vendors, our Fractional Head of SEO service is the better fit and can run the campaign inside it.
How soon should we expect results?
Coverage and referral traffic arrive in the launch window. Ranking movement typically shows within one to three months of links landing, and AI citations follow as the cited pages get crawled. Business outcomes depend on your sales cycle; the State of Backlinks report won clients for three years after each edition.
